Seven perfect days out from Kalkan

Kaputaş, Patara, a gulet day on the water, sunken cities and a gorge you wade through — the day trips worth leaving your pool for, all within easy reach of your villa.

Seven perfect days out from Kalkan

You could spend a fortnight in Kalkan without leaving the villa and the rooftops, and plenty of guests happily do. But this stretch of coast hides some of the finest beaches, ruins and boat trips in the Mediterranean — all close enough to be back for a sunset swim. Here are seven days out that earn their place.

1. Kaputaş Beach

Fifteen minutes along the coast road, a staircase drops into a gorge where pale sand meets water of an almost unreasonable blue. It's the postcard of the Turquoise Coast for good reason. Go early or late in high season — it's a small beach and everyone wants it.

2. Patara

Twenty-five minutes the other way: 18 kilometres of wide, wild sand backed by dunes and not a building in sight, because the whole beach is a protected site — loggerhead turtles nest here. Behind the dunes lie the ruins of ancient Patara, once the Lycian League's great harbour city, its theatre and colonnaded street half-swallowed by sand. Beach and history in one ticket.

3. A gulet day on the water

The classic Kalkan day: board a traditional wooden gulet in the harbour and spend the day swinging between swimming stops — secluded coves, sea caves, water so clear the anchor looks touchable. Lunch is cooked on board. Private charters are lovely for families and celebrations; we can arrange one from the villa.

4. Kekova and the sunken city

An hour east, then by boat or sea kayak: the half-submerged ruins of a Lycian town, sunk by earthquakes seventeen centuries ago. Staircases descend into clear water and amphora shards litter the seabed beneath your kayak. Pair it with the castle village of Kaleköy, reachable only by boat, for one of the great days out in Turkey.

5. Saklıkent Gorge

Inland, 45 minutes: a 300-metre-deep crack in the mountains where you wade upstream through cold, milky-blue meltwater between walls close enough to touch. Cooling, mildly adventurous and great fun with older children. River-terrace lunch on the way home, feet almost in the water.

6. Kaş

Kalkan's slightly bigger, arty neighbour, half an hour away: a harbour town of boutiques, galleries and café-lined lanes built around a Hellenistic theatre facing the sea. Go for the Friday market, stay for lunch, wander the peninsula road for the views.

7. The Lycian Way, gently

One of the world's great long-distance footpaths passes right through the hills above Kalkan. You don't need to walk 500 km — pick a morning stretch in spring or autumn, or the short hike to the lighthouse viewpoint above town, and you'll understand the fuss. Boots on by 8, swim by noon.

Making it easy

Every villa's welcome details include our current tips, and we can arrange hire-car delivery for a couple of days, a private gulet, or a driver for the day — just ask when you book or any time before you travel. The rule of thumb for all of it: out by mid-morning, back for the golden hour at the pool.
