Discovering Kalkan: the jewel of the Turquoise Coast
Whitewashed streets tumbling to a sapphire bay, rooftop dinners and long lazy lunches — why Kalkan quietly captures everyone who visits, and what makes a villa holiday here so special.
Some places you visit. Kalkan is a place you keep coming back to. Draped across a steep hillside on Turkey's south-west coast, this small town of whitewashed houses and cascading bougainvillea looks out over one of the most beautiful bays in the Mediterranean — the water so clear and so intensely blue it gave the Turquoise Coast its name.
A town with character, not crowds
Unlike the big package resorts further along the coast, Kalkan has stayed small, low-rise and deliberately upmarket. There are no high-rise hotels and no neon strip. Instead you find a maze of steep cobbled lanes in the old town, boutique shops, and — Kalkan's signature — dozens of rooftop restaurants where you dine above the harbour as the sun drops into the sea. It is the kind of place where guests return year after year and greet the same restaurateurs by name.
The beaches and the sea
Kalkan's beach clubs line the bay, offering sun loungers, ladders straight into deep clear water and a cold drink brought to your seat. A short drive away, the famous Kaputaş Beach sits at the foot of a dramatic gorge — a postcard of pale sand and electric-blue sea. Many guests, though, find they barely leave the villa: a private infinity pool with an uninterrupted sea view is the quiet luxury Kalkan does better than almost anywhere.
Days that fill themselves
Days here move at their own pace, but there is far more than sunbathing. Take a traditional gulet boat out to secluded coves and swim off the deck. Kayak over the sunken Lycian ruins at nearby Kekova, where a submerged ancient city shimmers beneath your boat. Walk a stretch of the Lycian Way, one of the world's great long-distance trails, which threads through the hills above town. Explore the ancient theatres and rock tombs at Xanthos, Patara and Letoon. Or simply spend a morning at the weekly market, where the produce is piled high and the pomegranate juice is freshly pressed.
Food worth travelling for
Kalkan's dining scene is a genuine draw. Rooftop terraces serve everything from meze and fresh-caught fish to accomplished modern Mediterranean cooking, and standards are high for such a small town. Long lunches by the harbour, sunset cocktails, and dinners under the stars are simply part of daily life here.
Why a villa, and why with us
What ties it all together is a feeling that is hard to manufacture: calm, safe, sophisticated, and beautiful in every direction. A villa gives you your own piece of it — breakfast on your terrace, a pool that belongs to nobody else, and the town ten minutes' stroll below. We live here year-round, we know every villa on our books personally, and if anything needs attention during your stay, someone who knows the house is minutes away. Spend one evening on a Kalkan rooftop watching the lights come on around the bay, and you'll understand why people don't just holiday here once.
